A number of pages in the Greek Lexicon are devoted to expressing doxa in terms of splendor, majesty, brightness, light, and radiance. It is usually translated glory. All of this is true, but when doxa is brought down to its simplest terms, it is defined as view or opinion. When speaking about God’s glory, we are speaking of all this splendor, majesty and radiance as a picture and manifestation of God’s view and opinion. God’s view and opinion is in fact reality. What God sees and perceives is reality; what you and I see and perceive is only at best our perception of reality. Our perception is limited to our perspective.
God has a view, an opinion, a perspective, and His view and opinion is reality. He tells us in Isaiah 55:9, “my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts are higher than you thoughts. ” God’s view of reality far surpasses anything we can imagine or think. In fact, how God sees things is how things really are.
God’s view on reality includes us experiencing His unconditional love and acceptance and to experience full lives in every area. Instead we have been conditioned over the years to view a reality where God is our enemy or our judge or someone who is completely indifferent towards us. We must do everything in our power to measure up to a standard that will appease Him. We find ourselves believing that if we pray enough, read our Bibles enough, do enough good things, or even believe big enough, we can convince Him to do something for us. If we do this hard enough and long enough then God might give us what we been asking for.
On the contrary, the Bible teaches us that God demonstrated His unconditional love for us when He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to live a sinless life as a human being and then at the end of his human life to die on a cross in our place. The Bible also tells us that Jesus became our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) and the curse (Galatians 3:13) on that cross. When he died he went into the grave with our sins and curse, conquered them there by faith and then by faith He was raised from the dead into the righteousness of God. Because Jesus accomplished this amazing work, He invites us to share in His inheritance. In Him we are become the righteousness of God, qualified to experience the abundant life that God gives to all those who believe in what Jesus has accomplished on their behalf. Not only that, but He has made it possible for every promise that God ever made anyone to be ours (2 Corinthians 1:20) to experience now.
This is God’s view and opinion of us. The question then is how do we experience this abundant life, a life that keeps getting better and better? In our day to day life’s experience how do we connect to this view of reality that God has qualified us for? It begins with a decision; a decision to let go of our view and opinion and accept God’s view and opinion; a decision to trust Him with our lives. While trusting Him in a child-like faith, we chose to follow Him one step at a time as He leads us out of our dysfunction into His ever increasing life. What will you decide?
